Fact-checking news reports and social media posts is critical in the age of misinformation, and disinformation. Children and young people especially must be media savvy and learn to protect themselves.
Fact-checking has always been an important skill for journalists when reporting about, for example, current events and politicians’ statements. Today, anyone who uses social media must learn to check facts, evaluate sources and view images and videos with a critical eye. We must learn to spot scams, and when governments or anti-democratic groups try to manipulate public opinion, impact elections, and/or encourage violence.
Media and Information Literacy Education teaches learners the basics of fact-checking and recognizing mis- and disinformation. MIL strengthens critical thinking and points out markers of deceptive content, know-how needs for children and young people to protect themselves online.
